Bimetal Thermostat

What is a Bimetal Thermostat?

It is the most common type of enclosure thermostat (adjustable bimetal thermostat. Unlike electronic versions, our bimetal thermostats use a pure mechanical snap-action disc. This makes them the lowest-cost, most rugged, and long-lasting solution to control cooling fans or heaters in your electrical cabinet. They are the industry standard for panel builders who value simplicity and reliability.

Bimetal Thermostat Working Principle

How a simple bimetal disc controls your Linkwell fan, AC unit or heater — no power needed, pure physics.

bimetal thermostat working principle

Heat triggers deflection

Two bonded metals (different expansion rates) bend when cabinet temperature rises above setpoint. The "active" layer expands more, forcing the strip to curve.

Snap‑action contact

At precise setpoint (e.g. +30°C) the disc suddenly snaps — not slowly bends. This rapid transfer eliminates arcing and ensures >100,000 cycles life.

Reset & dual control

When temperature drops (hysteresis ~3K), bimetal snaps back. NC contact closes to run enclosure heater. One SPDT thermostat manages both cooling and heating.

Your complete cabinet climate control ecosystem

Our bimetal thermostats are the brain of your enclosure — they command Linkwell cooling fans, air conditioners, and heaters to maintain optimal conditions.

Fan & Filters

5 sizes, IP54–IP68, UL certified, with built-in thermostat compatibility

Cabinet AC

500W–5000W, R134a, RS485, side/embedded mount – thermostat controlled

Enclosure Heater

Anti-condensation, 50W–500W, DIN rail, directly wired to bimetal output

Hygrostat

Electronic & bimetal combined for humidity control

Compliance & International Standards

The dedicated component for protective earth (PE) and neutral (N) connections — the foundation of panel safety.

Why Linkwell Bimetal Thermostat is the low-cost workhorse for panel builders

Designed specifically for industrial enclosures requiring reliable climate control. Our bimetal thermostats are DIN rail mounted, directly actuate cooling fans (up to 10A), AC units or heaters based on accurate snap-action principle.

As a cabinet component manufacturer, Linkwell designs thermostats that match perfectly with our cooling fans (axial, filter fans) and AC units. We offer custom marking, setpoint adjustment knobs, and even hybrid electronic/bimetal for special projects.

FAQ of Bimetal Thermostat

Can your bimetal directly switch a 0.5kW cabinet air conditioner?
Yes, our 10A version (TK series) switches up to 2500W resistive load. For larger AC units (like 5000W), the thermostat pilots a contactor – we can provide wiring diagrams and pre-assembled kits.
We provide single-pole double-throw (SPDT) bimetal thermostats: one contact for fan/AC (cooling), the other for heater (heating). One device manages both.

We supply potted (sealed) bimetal thermostats on request, or we recommend adding our hygrostat. However, standard units are IP20 for protected cabinet interior.

Yes, as a factory we produce fixed-setpoint bimetals for large orders. MOQ negotiable. Also offer customer-specific packaging and private label.
  1. Cold Test (Continuity): Use a multimeter on the continuity/ohms setting. At room temperature (below setpoint), the NC (Normally Closed) contact should show continuity (0 ohms), and the NO (Normally Open) contact should show infinite resistance (OL).

  2. Heat Test (Activation): Apply heat to the thermostat (using a hairdryer). When the temperature passes the setpoint, you should hear a faint “click.” At that moment, the continuity should swap: the NC contact now opens (OL), and the NO contact closes (0 ohms).

  3. Cool Down Test (Reset): Remove the heat and let it cool. When it drops below the setpoint (minus the hysteresis), it will click again and return to its original state.
